Welcome to cards from cold places.
The audiovisual season’s greetings cards you can view on this site is the result of three online workshops with CoMA Glasgow led by composer Simon Hellewell. The visual and audio materials are created using, or in response to, sights and sounds which attendees viewed as putting them in mind of the season, be that winter, Christmas, the solstice, or anything else people might be celebrating at this time of year. Some of the sounds were recorded individually between sessions and some were performed during the workshops. Being online workshops, we had attendees not just from Glasgow and Scotland, but also from across England and as far away as Germany.
The sounds and visuals have been abstracted, responded to creatively to create more material, and contextualised or re-contextualised through their placement alongside, for example, similar sounds of different origins or images which change how the sound might be understood. Some materials have been placed alongside the materials which influenced their creation, thoroughly exploring the nature of these varying associations, and drawing out the aesthetics of various elements of the season.
We have a number of broad strands explored with these cards. We see the joys of nature and the harder times of shorter days and hibernation. We see the warmth of food and company and the calm, introspective individuality of engaging in crafts.
This is our group seasons greeting to you, the viewer. We hope you are having a positive holiday season and getting to connect with all of your favourite sights and sounds which come with it.
